US Hospitals Adopting Finnish Baby Box

Providence Alaska Medical Center here in the US, have started giving new moms “baby boxes” to take home with them. An idea which originated in Finland back in the 1930s, these boxes have helped the country lower their infant mortality rate to one of the lowest in the world.

Filled with educational materials, onesies, bath supplies and more, they have everything that parents need to start their journey.

A leading cause of death in infants, sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) can occur when a baby turns onto his or her stomach during sleep. There are about 3,500 cases of this condition each year in the US alone, which means the baby box has the potential to save an incredible number of new lives. Because of the box’s small size, sturdy construction and firm foam mattress, it’s perfect for preventing the conditions that contribute to SIDS. According to Jennifer Clary, CEO of The Baby Box Co., “The rule of thumb is that when a child is strong enough to pull himself/herself up independently, the Baby Box should be retired.” We at Novum Medical Products, Inc. applaud hospitals that are providing these boxes to new parents free of charge, and are excited to see how they will positively impact the lives of new parents and infants across the country.

Until it’s time for mom and baby to go home, it’s important to have a safe place for the newborn to sleep in the hospital, which is where pediatric bassinets come into play.

Novum Medical bassinets do just this, creating a safe and durable environment for the child while also offering smooth, dependable travel from the nursery back to mom’s room.
